PETCO friend Regenize recently opened two new recycling hubs in just 44 days, enabling them to provide free recycling services to a total of five communities in the Western Cape and reward locals for their recycling efforts.

As they recycle, residents receive Remali credit, which they can use towards goodies at collaborating spaza shops or redeem in the form of data and airtime vouchers, along with grocery vouchers as available.

In May, Regenize opened the Tambo Village hub, between Manenberg and Gugulethu, and the Kewtown hub, in Athlone, in June. PETCO sponsored the Tambo Village project, which serves 1 500 residents, with six trolleys and personal protective equipment.

At both events, the community came in their numbers, including community action network (CAN) leaders from other communities. Aside from the ribbon-cutting ceremony, they were treated to a demonstration of the collection process and shown how the Remali concept works.

By launch day, locals broke the record with a 96% active sign-up rate.

Each hub benefits not only the environment but also many hard-working community members. It allows for a dignified collection process for waste pickers, job creation in the community, increased revenue for spaza shop owners, access to more foods for households, and, ultimately, a greener Cape Town.

With the aid of its sponsors, Regenize will be launching several additional hubs in communities such as Hanover Park, Gugulethu and Hazendal during the latter part of this year.
